Techniques, Training and Practice Pranayama & Asana

We believe that the breath (pranayama) is the most essential aspect of teaching yoga postures (asana).  Our students receive an in depth training not only in teaching asana, but how to use breath control throughout the class to influence the energy in yoga classes.  Students also develop their own pranayama practice to prepare for meditation

For so many of our students, asana (postures) is what draws them to yoga.  It gets them hooked.  Understanding how to teach the postures safely and effectively is another top priority.  Our approach to teaching asana includes: key alignment principles, major functions of each posture, modifications (including supportive and challenging versions), and the energetics of sequencing.

Vertical Soul Yoga strongly emphasizes the spiritual aspect of yoga.  Students have direct experiences with the higher limbs of yoga that lead us to clear perception that we are One.

Teaching Methodology

Vertical Soul Yoga is proud to see the diversity that comes out of the training.  Our emphasis is to give students the foundation necessary to teach a yoga class based on the science of Hatha Yoga; moreover, it allows them to find their unique teaching style.  We stress the importance of understanding different learning modalities students have and how, as teachers, to use a set of skills that will reach all of our students.

Anatomy and Physiology

Our Anatomy and Physiology training section is by far one of the top anatomy trainings available in Arizona.  Students gain an understanding physical anatomy and how it related to the metaphysical aspects of yoga.  This portion requires them to take a deeper look into themselves, which is absolutely essential before they start to teach others.

Yoga Philosophy, Lifestyle and Ethics

Throughout the training it becomes very clear that yoga is a lifestyle; It changes how we see ourselves and how we see the world.  The ethics of yoga are not a set of standards to live by.  The more we learn about yoga, the more we are faced to examine ourselves; during this examination the veil is removed.  An inner love is heightened, and our lifestyle becomes ruled by that love.

Because we prioritize small class sizes and foster a nurturing learning environment, the practicum is one of the most transformational parts of the training.   Students have the opportunity to teach and receive the necessary feedback to help them become the best teachers they can be.
